Thursday, January 15: Last Day before the exam week!

OK, here is where we stand:

All of you have sent in a topic and an outline

Most of you have passed in the text of your on air ID and the name of your theme song,
except for Tyler, Ben and Mason --guys, please see me on this.

Most of you have uploaded your theme song except for Brendan F., Mason and Tyler. Also Nicole, I only part the parts for your theme, not the whole thing put together as a separate file

Speaking of separate files, I need the actual file for your RECORDED on air ID, I still need this from Kate, Mateo, JP, Trevor, Ben, Greg, Brendan L, Thiago, Mason, Nicole, Tyler and Brian

The final "totally put together" broadcasts I have not had the chance to actually review just yet, but I have received what passes for these files from the following people:

Z Hutch
Brendan L

Those of you who have made your final broadcasts but have not yet uploaded them, UPLOAD THEM ASAP!

Those of you who haven't gotten next door to record yet, you need to get in there today, starting with those who are "finishing up" from yesterday

Time's a wastin', guys!

Wednesday, January 14: two days left before the exam week!

Greetings, radio children!

Today, you have three basic things to accomplish:

A) if you haven't uploaded a script yet, you need to. TODAY

B) If you have done a script, you need to record at least the majority of your show. TODAY

C) You need to make up anything else you have missed, starting TODAY.

Remember to save your shows as mp3 files, and to upload them to Box.net. Also remember that you need to combine your shows with separate theme song and on air identifier files for a finished product.

Cheers,
Mr. L

Monday, January 12: do I see a finish line up ahead?

Greetings, fellow broadcasters!
Today, you will continue to work on your final broadcasts. Most of you are at the point that you will start going next door to begin recording the main parts of your broadcast. Remember though, you will need to have your script posted before you do that! Here is where you all stand:

Topic and topic outline
Everyone is done with this already! Good job!

On air Id (text) and chosen theme song:
Ben Tyler and Brian still owe me the text of their on air identifiers

Kate, Mateo, Ben, Greg, Tyler and Brian still owe the name of the song or songs they will use in creating their theme song.

uploaded a finished theme song
only JP, Zhutch, Brendan L. and Nicole have done this so far

record your on air identifier
I only have this from Mike C., Zach D., Wesley and Brendan F.

script posted
I have scripts from Keith, Kate, Mateo, Mike C(a little minimal though!), Zach D, Brendan D, Wesley, Ben G., Zhutch, Brendan L, Thaigo and Mason

OK, that should get us started. You know what to do, so let's just do it

Friday January 9: finishing scripts, getting studio time, starting to put together a"rough draft"

Greetings, RADIO 3!

Before I begin with the "new stuff" for today, I need to point out that at least half of you have not sent me an email stating what your "on air identifier" will be, and there are similar numbers for having SELECTED a theme song, and notified me by email which it would be. That needs to be done ASAP.

Also, once you've chosen a theme song, you need to get the actual file, and select a piece of it not less than 30 seconds and no longer than 55 seconds. That selection must be saved as an mp3 type file, and then uploaded to me on Box.net. PLEASE NAME IT in such a way that I know who it belongs to. If I have to guess, I will simply delete it and have you start over.

I am also still awaiting scripts from many of you (see yesterday's post).

NOW FOR THE NEW STUFF
If you are caught up with all of this, then you need to get next door, and start recording both your on-air identifier AS A SEPARATE FILE. Please upload it to Box.net, and make sure it is CLEARLY LABELED. If I have to guess, I'm tossing it out.

If there is time, then you may begin recording some part of your broadcast; this is not necessary for today though

Thursday January 8: scripts, studio time & getting caught up!

Greetings once again! I am pleased with your progress so far: all of you have sent in a topic and an outline, without exception. Magnificent! Many of you have also sent in the written description of what your on air ID will be, and have indicated which files you want to use for your theme songs. Now it's time for the next steps:

A) Each of you is expected to set up a script based on your topic and outline. The script needs to include at least three major statements you want to make about each of the five to seven points in your outline. Each statement must be made in the form of a complete sentence. This needs to be posted to our Google group under the heading that includes your name plus the word "Script" Take your time, and really think about what you want to say. We're still good for time, so no worries, OK? PLEASE NOTE: You should not be recording any part of your main broadcast until this is done first!

B) Some of you have expressed an in getting next door to record your on air IDs; that will be available as soon as you have sent me by email the written part of what your ID will state.

C) which brings me to the next point: I am still waiting for many of you to tell me what this on air ID will say, as well as telling me which file(s) you will want to use for your theme song. This needs to happen ASAP

D) Finally, if you are able to work on that theme song here using Audition, please do so.

That should be enough for today. Remember, no game playing, this is serious business

Tuesday, January 6: keep on with the work assigned yesterday

Greetings children,

I have been responding to your topic proposals as quickly as possible; I am also gratified to be receiving topic outlines from those who have had their topics approved. Please make sure that your topic has been approved first before you send an outline, or do anything else. If you have not gotten an email reply from me on your topic, then I either didn't get it yet, or it has not been approved.

Let's do it, let's get it done!

Mr. L

PS If you need any assistance getting a particular song or sound files for your new theme song, please email me with a request for help. Please put your name + "I need" + the name of the song, and the band in CAPS in the Subject Line. I will try to get it for you by this Thursday, which is the next time we meet. Please don't stop trying to get it yourself, though!

Monday, January 5: Welcome back!

Hello everyone, and welcome back. By my count, we have exactly seven class days left** before the MLK Monday holiday on January 19th. The next three days, we have exams. And then, th-th-th-that's all folks! we are D-O-N-E. So we have to make these remaining days count.

What I would like to begin with today is some basic exam prep. That may sound backwards, but think about it: exactly what kind of exam could we have in a class like this? How do you fit Radio Production into a multiple choice format? So here is what we are going to begin with:

A) The "exam" -- such as it is-- must be an individual effort. This is NOT a group project!

B) As such, each of you is responsible for your own work. Your exam grade will be YOUR exam grade

C) First and foremost, each of you will be required to make an individual radio broadcast, using the equipment next door. The final product must be an mp3 file.

D) Long before that final product rolls out, Each of you will need to come up with a topic for your final broadcast. It can be anything you want, provided that it is school appropriate. You will need to email that idea for a final project TODAY. Your full name and the word "topic" must be present in the Subject line.

E) After I have emailed you back APPROVING this topic, you may then proceed to developing an outline for it, detailing at least 5 to 7 things you want to say about your topic while you are making your broadcast. Each item must be listed as a complete sentence. Your full name and the words "topic out line" must be in the Subject line

F) You may keep the radio name you have made for yourself, but as an individual broadcaster, you must come up with a new theme song -- just as we did at the beginning of the course--and a new "on air identifier". Both the name of the song(s) you intend to use to create your theme song, AND the exact words you intend to use in your "identifier" must be emailed to me TODAY. Please put your full name and the phrase "theme and identifier" in the Subject line of your email.

That should be enough for a start for today. Time permitting, we may try to get to some other items, but only if it is absolutely possible

As always, there is to be no game playing of ANY kind. I will simply shut you down for the remainder of the class if you make the attempt. If you get "bored" why then, make yourself useful

the faster we go,
the rounder we get
